Add the Needed Repositories for Kali Linux

Hello Kali Linux Hackers.

In this article I will show you how to add the needed repositories for Kali Linux.http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-LfKRT4IDC_0/UUC1Uo8xb7I/AAAAAAAAU50/v4NPLDzDSIk/s1600/Download+Kali+Linux,+from+the+creators+of+BackTrack.png

As you may know, Kali is a penetration Linux System based on Debian. It is developed by the Backtrack team.

To add repositories, open the /etc/apt/sources.list file in your favourite text editor as root, and paste the following lines:

$ gksudo /etc/apt/sources.list

Paste this:

deb http://http.kali.org/ /kali main contrib non-free
deb http://http.kali.org/ /wheezy main contrib non-free
deb http://http.kali.org/kali kali-dev main contrib non-free
deb http://http.kali.org/kali kali-dev main/debian-installer
deb-src http://http.kali.org/kali kali-dev main contrib non-free
deb http://http.kali.org/kali kali main contrib non-free
deb http://http.kali.org/kali kali main/debian-installer
deb-src http://http.kali.org/kali kali main contrib non-free
deb http://security.kali.org/kali-security kali/updates main contrib non-free
deb-src http://security.kali.org/kali-security kali/updates main contrib non-free
deb http://repo.kali.org/kali kali-bleeding-edge main

Save and update the system:

$ sudo apt-get update

Now, you are ready to go.

    Thanks for the article !

    Have you tried adding these repos on an Ubuntu distro ?

    Have a good weekend !

  2. LinuxER says:

    yes, they may work on ubuntu as well, since ubuntu is debian based also. but for sure, kali is not 100 % compatible with ubuntu, as it is with debian.

    @LinuxER

    “because kali is debian based”

    What exactly do you think ubuntu is?

    The repos will work in ubuntu, at least they did in Backtrack 5. Backtrack itself was originally based on ubuntu.

    Ubuntu is based on debian but has its own package repositories and is now totally separate from Debian. Ubunbu and Debian packages are not cross-compatible. Kali is based directly on Debian and uses the Debian package repository and Debian packages. Backtrack was based on Ubunbu and used Ubuntu packages. This is why it is not advised to use Kali packages on Ubuntu or Backtrack packages on Debian. You will have problems.

      i think you use the KALI Linux Live CD. after you install Kali on your computer and redo the needed commands, for adding repos, everything should be ok.
