Debian 8.0 Jessie May Come With XFCE As The Default Desktop Environment

Hello Linux Geeksters. Not long ago, the developers have scheduled the freeze date of Debian 8.0 Jessie and created a small list of the improvements that will come with the next Debian system.

Now, the developers are thinking of releasing Debian 8.0 Jessie with XFCE as the default desktop environment, as a replacement for GNOME 3, which was the default on Debian Wheezy. The discussions for switching to XFCE will start in August 2014, before the freeze, which is scheduled for November 2014.

Debian 8.0 Jessie May Come With XFCE As The Default Desktop Environment

Since GNOME 2 is old and outdated, adopting XFCE may be a good decision, since it is lightweight but modern enough get customizations, it uses LightDM as the default display manager so it does not depends on Gnome’s GDM and the installer’s image may fit on a CD.

We’ll see if this really happens or the idea will be dropped for the final version of Debian Jessie.

Hopefully it will come with 4.10 or 4.11 and the Whisker Menu. It needs a bit of upgrading for the appearance. Maybe a gradient panel, some different window managers with some nice graphics.
Being lightweight I don’t think is such a big issue anymore with most computers coming with at least 2gb ram and a dual core processor.
If you are coming from Windows then pretty much any DE is lighter.

XFCE would be great! My favourite DE right now! It wouldn’t be a bad ideea to have a backup DE also, something like LXde or maybe MATE (it is a Gnome2 fork after all, isn’t it).
