Games on Linux: How to install SuperTuxKart on Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Fedora, OpenSUSE and Debian

In this article I will show you how to install SuperTuxKart 0.8 on Ubuntu 12.10, Ubuntu 12.04, Linux Mint 14, Linux Mint 13, Debian Sid, Debian Wheezy, Debian Sid, Fedora 18, Fedora 17, OpenSUSE 12.3 and OpenSUSE 12.2.

SuperTuxKart, (STK) is a Mario Kart-like arcade racing game featuring the Linux mascot Tux. STK is available for Windows, Mac OSX and Linux. The latest version of the game is 0.8, launched on the 11th of December, 2012.

The game can be played by 4 players from the same PC. It is not a realistic game, but a big source of entertainment.

How to install SuperTuxKart on Ubuntu 12.10 and Ubuntu 12.04:

Install the repo’s key:

$ sudo wget -q -O- http://archive.getdeb.net/getdeb-archive.key | apt-key add -

Add the game’s repo:

$ sudo echo 'deb http://archive.getdeb.net/ubuntu/ $(lsb_release -c | awk '{print $2}')-getdeb games

Update the repositories:

$ sudo apt-get update

Install SuperTuxKart:

$ sudo apt-get install supertuxkart

How to install SuperTuxKart on Opensuse 12.3:

Add the repository:

for 32 bit systems:

$ sudo zypper addrepo http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/games/openSUSE_12.3/ opensuse-games-i586

for 64 bit systems:

$ sudo zypper addrepo http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/games/openSUSE_12.3/ opensuse-games-x86_64

Update the repository index:

$ zypper refresh

Install the game:

$ sudo zypper install supertuxkart

How to install SuperTuxKart on Opensuse 12.2:

To install SuperTuxKart on OpenSUSE 12.2, follow the installation steps for OpenSUSE 12.3, and replace 12.3 in the repository path with 12.2.

How to install SuperTuxKart on Debian Sid / Wheezy / Squeeze, Fedora 18 / 17 and Linux Mint 14 / 13:

For Debian Sid / Wheezy / Squeeze, Linux Mint 14 / 13 and Fedora 18 / 17, we have to do an installation from sources, because STK 0.8 is not available in any repository for this distributions.

Download the STK tarball:

  • for 32 bit systems: http://sourceforge.net/projects/supertuxkart/files/SuperTuxKart/0.8/supertuxkart-0.8-linux-glibc2.7-i386.tar.bz2/download
  • for 64 bit systems: http://sourceforge.net/projects/supertuxkart/files/SuperTuxKart/0.8/supertuxkart-0.8-lin-amd64.tar.bz2/download

Extract the archive and cd into the supertuxkart directory:

$ tar -xjvf supertuxkart*.bz2
$ cd supertuxkart*

Compile and install:

$ sudo make && make install
