How to Fix Wireless problems on Dell Inspiron Laptops using Broadcom 43142 (BCM43142) and Ubuntu 12.10

It is a common problem for the Dell Inspiron Laptops using Broadcom 43142 (BCM43142) network card not to see wireless networks on Ubuntu 12.10.

But this can be solved in a few steps:

1. Download the Broadcom 43142 driver:
$ wget http://jas.gemnetworks.com/debian/pool/main/w/wireless-bcm43142/wireless-bcm43142-dkms_6.20.55.19-1_amd64.deb

2. Install the needed dependencies:
$ sudo apt-get install linux-headers-generic build-essential dkms

3. Install the downloaded BCM43142 driver:
$ sudo dpkg -i wireless-bcm43142-dkms_6.20.55.19-1_amd64.deb

This tutorial solved the wireless problem on Dell Inspiron 5520 and Dell Inspiron 5720.

Note: The driver I linked in the article is for 64 bit sytems (x86_64). To make it work on 32 bit systems, install ia32-libs:

$ sudo apt-get install ia32-libs

I am not sure that after installing ia32-libs, everything will work perfect, but you can try.

    I have edited the post to fit your needs.

    you are trying to install an 64bit program on an 32bit system.

    install ia32-libs and try to install the broadcom package with dpkg again:

    sudo apt-get install ia32-libs

    sudo dpkg -i wireless-bcm43142-dkms_6.20.55.19-1_amd64.deb

    Hi!

    I have solved the problem with Broadcom BCM43142 on my Lenovo Thinkpad edge e545

    I installed Linux Mint Debian Edition 17 with kernel 3.11

    Through Synaptic i have installed package – broadcom-sta-dkms (version 6.30.223.141-1)

    Seems to me it works after this packages has been installed (i don`t remember exactly, sorry)

    Hey, I had tried a lot to resolved this same issue. This blog is savior and only the ray of hope to get installed Wireless driver. I had tried since 3 Years, None distro of Linux helped me to establish the Wireless driver. Previous comment was also mine.
    I have following configuration :

    Dell Inspiron 15R (5520) : Broadcom BCM43142.
    OS : CentOS 7 (x64).

    Will you please help me once, I’m newbie for Linux, I want to learn Linux but this issue always pool-back me to windows. Now, I’m getting learning something, I had taken reference manual : https://www.broadcom.com/docs/linux_sta/README_6.30.223.248.txt and visited various blogs and forum. None of them helped me. Thanks.

    Please help me to solve this issue with Centos.
