Because it is available via the Canonical Partner PPA, installing Adobe Reader (Acrobat Reader) 9.5.5 on Ubuntu and Linux Mint is easy. All you have to do is:

Add the PPA:

$ sudo add-apt-repository "deb http://archive.canonical.com/ $(lsb_release -sc) partner"

Update the local repository index:

$ sudo apt-get update
