How To Install (And Test) GNOME 3.14 On Arch Linux

Hello Linux Geeksters. As you may know, GNOME 3.14 has been recently released, finally working well with PackageKit’s Pacman (the Arch Linux package manager) back-end, the GNOME Software now being capable to utilize native AppStream meta-data.

Among others, GNOME 3.14 comes with a rewritten Adwaita theme, new animations for the launched applications have been added, two new applications to feed results to the system search have been made available via one keystroke, Clocks will now return search results for world cities, a new tool Go Go GTK+ Inspector has been implemented for the developers, the GNOME Photos application got better integration with Picasa, Android and Google+ and the spinners have been enhanced and the HiDPI support has been improved.

In this article I will show you how to install GNOME 3.14 on Arch Linux.

How To Install (And Test) GNOME 3.14 On Arch Linux

While GNOME 3.14 is not yet availableĀ  via the Gnome Stable repository, we have to use the Gnome Unstable repository and a few others.

Follow the below instructions exactly, in order to get GNOME 3.14 on Arch Linux.

Add the GNOME Unstable repository:

$ sudo sh -c 'echo [gnome-unstable] >> /etc/pacman.conf'
$ sudo sh -c 'echo "Include = /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist" >> /etc/pacman.conf'

Add the Testing repository:

$ sudo sh -c 'echo [testing] >> /etc/pacman.conf'
$ sudo sh -c 'echo "Include = /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist" >> /etc/pacman.conf'

Add the Core repository:

$ sudo sh -c 'echo [core] >> /etc/pacman.conf'
$ sudo sh -c 'echo "Include = /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist" >> /etc/pacman.conf'

Add the Extra repository:

$ sudo sh -c 'echo [extra] >> /etc/pacman.conf'
$ sudo sh -c 'echo "Include = /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist" >> /etc/pacman.conf'

Add the Multilib repository:

$ sudo sh -c 'echo "[multilib]" >> /etc/pacman.conf'
$ sudo sh -c 'echo "Include = /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist" >> /etc/pacman.conf'

Update the local repository index and install gnome shell:

$ sudo pacman -Sy gnome-shell

Reboot and choose GNOME Shell from the display manager.
