How To Install Battle For Wesnoth 1.10.6 On Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Elementary OS And Debian

As you may know, Battle for Wesnoth is an open source turn-based strategy game, running on Linux. The player trains soldiers, to create an undefeatable army, in order to fight agains orcs, undead, bandits and win, in the Kingdom of Wesnoth.

The game is very competitive, the user can choose from hundreds of different soldier types, like infantry, cavalry, archers, mages, et cetera and fight with friends or strangers, in multi-player mode.

The latest stable version available is Battle for Wesnoth 1.10.7, but it is not available via PPA yet.

In this article  I will show you how to install Battle For Wesnoth 1.10.6 on Ubuntu 13.10 Saucy Salamander, Ubuntu 13.04 Raring Ringtail, Ubuntu 12.10 Quantal Quetzal, Ubuntu 12.04 Precise Pangolin, Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx, Linux Mint 16 Petra, Linux Mint 15 Olivia, Linux Mint 14 Nadia, Linux Mint 13 Maya, Debian Jessie, Debian Sid and Debian Wheezy.

Battle For Wesnoth 1.10.6 is available via the default repositories of Ubuntu 13.10, Ubuntu 13.04, Linux Mint 16, Linux Mint 15, Debian Jessie and Debian Sid, so, update the repository index and install the wesnoth-1.10 package, like this:

$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get install wesnoth-1.10

Because it is available via both third party PPA and in the Ubuntu backports repository, I have decided to use the PPA, because I find it easier. So, to install Battle For Wesnoth 1.10.6 on Ubuntu 12.10, Ubuntu 12.04, Ubuntu 10.04, Linux Mint 14, Linux Mint 13 and Elementary OS 0.2 Luna, do:

$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:vincent-c/wesnoth
$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get install wesnoth-1.10

Battle For Wesnoth 1.10.6 is available Debian Wheezy Backports Repository, so to install on Debian Wheezy, do:

$ sudo sh -c 'echo "deb http://ftp.debian.org/debian/ wheezy-backports main" >> /etc/apt/sources.list'
$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get install wesnoth-1.10
