How to Install Cinnamon 1.6.1 on OpenSUSE 12.3

In this article I will show you how to install Cinnamon 1.6.1 on the new OpenSUSE 12.3.

As you may know, OpenSUSE 12.3 comes with many desktop environments, like KDE, Gnome, XFCE or E17, but if you are a Cinnamon fan, why not use your favourite environment?

Because Cinnamon is in the default OpenSUSE repositories, you can simply install it with zypper, without needing to add any new repo:

$ sudo zypper in cinnamon

If you can’t find cinnamon in the default opensuse repos, you can add this official cinnamon repo by hand:

1. Create the repo file in the right place:
$ sudo su
# touch /etc/zypp/repos.d/cinnamon.repo

2. Add the repo data:
Paste the following lines in the /etc/zypp/repos.d/cinnamon.repo:

[home_cyberorg_cinnamon]
name=cinnamon (openSUSE_12.3)
type=rpm-md
baseurl=http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/cyberorg:/cinnamon/openSUSE_12.3/
gpgcheck=1
gpgkey=http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/cyberorg:/cinnamon/openSUSE_12.3/repodata/repomd.xml.key
enabled=1

3. Update the system:

# zypper refresh

4. Install Cinnamon:

# zypper in cinnamon

This is it. If you don’t like to use the command line interface for doing installations, you can download Cinnamon from here, double click it and install it Windows style.
