How To Install Cinnamon 2.2.0 And Mate 1.8 on Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty Tahr

Hello Linux Geeksters. As you may know, Cinnamon and Mate are two desktop environments based on the good old GNOME2, used by default on Linux Mint. Cinnamon 2.2.0 and Mate 1.8 will be available by default on Linux Mint 17 Qiana, which will be released in a few weeks (now, only the RC version of Linux Mint 17 being available).

If you don’t like the desktop environments available by default on Ubuntu 14.04 and the official flavors, you can install one of the two GNOME 2 forks easily.

In this article I will show you how to install Cinnamon 2.2.0 or Mate 1.8 on Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty Tahr.

How to install Cinnamon 2.2.0 on Ubuntu 14.04:

Cinnamon 2.2.0 is not available via PPA anymore, but we can use the official Linux Mint repository, so installing it on Ubuntu 14.04 is easy. All you have to do is add the repo to your system, update the local repository index and install the linuxmint-keyring and cinnamon packages. Like this:

$ sudo sh -c 'echo "deb http://packages.linuxmint.com/ qiana main upstream import" >> /etc/sources.list'
$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get install linuxmint-keyring
$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get install cinnamon

Just reboot and choose either Mate or Cinnamon from the LightDM Greeter, after the installation has been successfully done.

How to install Mate 1.8 on Ubuntu 14.04:

Mate 1.8 is also available via repository, so all you have to do to get it on your Ubuntu 14.04 system is:

$ echo "deb http://repo.mate-desktop.org/archive/1.8/ubuntu $(lsb_release -cs) main" | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/mate-desktop.list
$ wget -qO - http://mirror1.mate-desktop.org/debian/mate-archive-keyring.gpg | sudo apt-key add -
$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get install mate-core mate-desktop-environment mate-notification-daemon

Just reboot and choose either Mate or Cinnamon from the LightDM Greeter, after the installation has been successfully done.

    I had an error try to install the PPA for 14.04. Gave up at sudo apt-get update when it didn’t accept the PPA-404 Error

    I’m running 14.04 with Cinnamon 2.2 already. Can it coexist with Mate 1.8? I don’t have Unity desktop or Gnome Shell.
