Hello Linux Geeksters. As you may know, Drawers is an open source application, that enables the users to create drawers for the Unity Launcher, which enables the users to organize their favorite apps, in quick lists.
Via the Active Drawers, the users can launch the content of the a folder (by left clicking), which gets updated when new files is added, or access the files as quicklists, by right clicking. The quicklist displays only the most recent 10 items, but they can also be pinned, to be always available.
The AppMenu Drawers provides a Gnome Classic-like application menu, enabling the users to categorize the apps in order to have them displayed automatically, and pinned to the Launcher’s quicklist.
The latest version available is Drawers 13.10, which has been recently released.
In this article I will show you how to install Drawers 13.10 on Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty Tahr and Ubuntu 13.10 Saucy Salamander.
Because it is available via PPA, installing Drawers 13.10 on Ubuntu 14.04 and Ubuntu 13.10 is easy. All you have to do is add the ppa to your system, update the local repository index and install the drawers package. Like this:
$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ian-berke/ppa-drawers
$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get install drawers
Optional, to remove drawers, do:
$ sudo apt-get remove drawers
Or, if you want to uninstall drawers, disable the recently added PPA and downgrade all the packages that got updated via the PPA, do:
$ sudo apt-get install ppa-purge
$ sudo ppa-purge ppa:ian-berke/ppa-drawers
Drawers doesn’t appear to be working yet on 14.04 LTS (Trusty). I’m not sure if the repository has (or will be) updated.
Strange. I wonder what I could possibly be doing wrong. I followed your instructions above precisely on a fresh install of 14.04LTS and it is exhibiting the same bug some others have reported. Unity doesn’t seem to be transferring information to ‘drawers’; we just get a ‘star’ icon with no launch information in the drawer.
Did you install under the full LTS release?
Thank you for your help.
yes, I have tested it on the a fresh version of Ubuntu 14.04 (using Unity).
Something doesn’t make sense – you’re running 14.04 LTS “trusty”, not an upgraded version? Other people have been requesting the repository be updated to support ‘trusty’, and have reported the same bug. I don’t know what I could be doing wrong. There isn’t anything esoteric installed on my installation, it is largely a fresh install of the LTS downloaded on Thrusday 4/17.
Any suggestions? Thanks.
by upgraded version, you mean a trusty system upgraded from a previous ubuntu version? NO, i have a fresh install. the Launchpad PPA got updated a while ago, receiving the drawers 13.10 version, which comes with support for Ubuntu Trusty (as written in the article)

Thank you for your help and patience!
Something about the release your using must be handling the problem the developer and I have notice with respect to dragging from the Dash to ‘Drawers’

Thanks Brian for the link to the issue from the creator of Drawers. This was bugging the heck out of me until I found this thread. I too could not drag icons from Unity.
