How To Install Fotoxx 15.04 On Ubuntu 14.10, Ubuntu 14.04, Debian Jessie And Derivative Systems

Hello Linux Geeksters. As you may know, Fotoxx is an open source photo editing program, working on Linux. It has support for the most important image formats, including JPEG, BMP, PNG, TIFF and RAW. Fotoxx is mostly used for cropping, resizing or retouching photos, without using layers, like Photoshop.

The latest version available is Fotoxx 15.04, which has been recently released, coming with the below changes:

  • New: Zonal Flatten: enhance contrast in dull areas, even if overall brightness and contrast is already well optimized (powerful, try it).
  • New: Directed Blur: 1-dimensional image blur in direction of mouse drag.
  • Properly extract thumbnails from RAW files enclosing .ppm thumbnails.
  • Album edit: View any image full size while adding and arranging images.
  • Slide Show: Support for stop show, jump to a new position, resume show.
  • Slide Show: New image transitions: implode, explode, Japanese fan.
  • Print dialog accepts margin inputs in either inches or centimeters.
  • New user setting: show or hide hidden directories in gallery view.
  • Bugfix: print dialog: displayed print size was not always correct.

In this article I will show you how to install Fotoxx 15.04 on Ubuntu 15.04 Vivid Vervet, Ubuntu 14.10 Utopic Unicorn, Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty Tahr, Debian 8 Jessie and derivative systems: Linux Mint 17.1 Rebecca, Linux Mint 17 Qiana, Pinguy OS 14.04, Elementary OS 0.3 Freya, Deepin 2014, Peppermint Five, LXLE 14.04 and Linux Lite 2.

For Ubuntu 14.10, Ubuntu 14.04 and derivative systems, Fotoxx 15.04 is available via PPA, so installing it is easy. All you have to do is add the ppa to your system, update the local repository index and install the fotoxx package. Like this:

$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:dhor/myway
$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get install fotoxx

For Ubuntu 15.04 and Debian 8, we have to download the deb package from the project’s website and install it by hand. I prefer gdebi over dpkg due to the fact that it also handles dependencies. Follow the instructions for your system’s architecture exactly, in order to get a successful installation.

Instructions for 32 bit systems:

$ wget http://www.kornelix.com/uploads/1/3/0/3/13035936/fotoxx-15.04-i686.deb
$ sudo apt-get install gdebi
$ sudo gdebi fotoxx-15.04-i686.deb

Instructions for 64 bit systems:

$ wget http://www.kornelix.com/uploads/1/3/0/3/13035936/fotoxx-15.04-x86_64.deb
$ sudo apt-get install gdebi
$ sudo gdebi fotoxx-fotoxx-15.04-x86_64.deb

Optional, to remove Fotoxx 15.04 from either Ubuntu, Debian or a derivative system, do:

$ sudo apt-get remove fotoxx
