Hello Linux Geeksters. As you may know, Geary is a lightweight email client, written in Vala, built for the Gnome desktop. It is also the default mail client on Elementary OS 0.2 Luna.

The latest version available is Geary 0.7.0, which has been released a while ago, coming with some changes. Among others, a new major overhaul of the email composer has been implemented, the composer will now automatically add signature to emails, a feature for disabling saving drafts has been implemented, the main window interface has been enhanced, receiving support for GtkHeaderBar, the connection retry function has been improved and some database optimizations have been implemented.

In this article I will show you how to install Geary 0.7.0 on Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty Tahr, Linux Mint 17 Qiana, Pinguy OS 14.04, LXLE 14.04, Elementary OS 0.3 Freya, LXLE 14.04, Linux Lite 2.0, Deepin 2014, Peppermint Five and Fedora 20 systems.

Because it is not available via any repository or PPA, we have to install Geary 0.7.0 on Ubuntu 14.04 (and derivatives) or Fedora 20 from sources. Follow the instructions for your system and architecture exactly, in order to get a successful installation.

How to install Geary 0.7.0 on Ubuntu 14.04 and derivative systems:

Install the needed dependencies:

$ sudo apt-get install valac libgirepository1.0-dev intltool cmake desktop-file-utils gnome-doc-utils libcanberra-dev libgee-0.8-dev libglib2.0-dev libgmime-2.6-dev libgtk-3-dev libsecret-1-dev libxml2-dev libnotify-dev libsqlite3-dev libunique-3.0-dev libwebkitgtk-3.0-dev libmessaging-menu-dev libunity-dev

Download the Geary 0.7.0 archive, extract it and cd into the extracted folder:

$ wget download.gnome.org/sources/geary/0.7/geary-0.7.0.tar.xz
$ tar -xJvf geary-0.7.0.tar.xz
$ cd geary-0.7.0

Configure, build and install:

$ ./configure
$ make
$ sudo make install

How to install Geary 0.7.0 on Fedora 20 systems:

Install the needed dependencies:

$ sudo yum install vala gobject-introspection-devel intltool cmake desktop-file-utils gnome-doc-utils libcanberra-devel libgee-devel glib2-devel gmime-devel gtk3-devel libnotify-devel sqlite-devel unique3-devel webkitgtk3-devel libsecret-devel libxml2-devel vala-tools

Download the Geary 0.7.0 archive, extract it and cd into the extracted folder:

$ wget download.gnome.org/sources/geary/0.7/geary-0.7.0.tar.xz
$ tar -xJvf geary-0.7.0.tar.xz
$ cd geary-0.7.0

Configure, build and install:

$ ./configure
$ make
$ sudo make install
