How To Install Geary 0.7.1 On Ubuntu 14.04, Linux Mint 17, Pinguy OS 14.04, Elementary OS 0.3 And Other Ubuntu 14.04 Derivative Systems

Hello Linux Geeksters. As you may know, Geary is a lightweight email client, written in Vala, built for the Gnome desktop. It is also the default mail client on Elementary OS 0.2 Luna.

The latest version available is Geary 0.7.1, which has been released a while ago, coming with the below changes:

  • Show attachments lacking a Content-Disposition
  • Prevent Inbox from being cleared at startup (Dovecot, Zimbra, more)
  • Major memory leak (due to GMime bindings) fixes
  • Improved IMAP disconnect/reconnect logic
  • Autocomplete properly quotes RFC822 strings
  • Stabilize search results to prevent lost or dropped results
  • Inline composer polish
  • Updated translations

In this article I will show you how to install Geary 0.7.1 on Ubuntu 14.10 Utopic Unicorn, Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty Tahr, Linux Mint 17 Qiana, Pinguy OS 14.04, Elementary OS 0.3 Freya, Deepin 2014, LXLE 14.04, Linux Lite 2.0, Peppermint Five and other Ubuntu 14.10/Ubuntu 14.04 derivative systems.

Because it is available via PPA, installing Geary 0.7.1 on Ubuntu 14.10, Ubuntu 14.04 and derivatives is easy. All you have to do is install the needed dependency, add the ppa to your system, update the local repository index and install the geary package.

$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get install geary

How to install Geary 0.7.1 on 64 bit Ubuntu 14.04 and derivative systems:

$ sudo apt-get install gdebi
$ wget http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian/pool/main/libg/libgee-0.8/libgee-0.8-2_0.14.0-1_amd64.deb
$ sudo gdebi libgee-0.8-2_0.14.0-1_amd64.deb
$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:yorba/daily-builds
$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get install geary

Optional, to remove geary, from both 32 bit and 64 bit Ubuntu and derivative systems, do:

$ sudo apt-get remove geary
