Hello Linux Geeksters. As you may know, Kernel 3.16.1 has been released today, coming with a few TCP updates for Kernel 3.16, the kernel which will most likely used on Fedora 21, Debian Jessie and Ubuntu 14.10. For information about this release, see the changelog.

In this article I will show you how to install Kernel 3.16.1 on Ubuntu 14.04 Trusy Tahr, Linux Mint 17 Qiana, Pinguy OS 14.04, LXLE 14.04, Peppermint Five, Deepin 2014, Linux Lite 2.0, Elementary OS 0.3 Freya and other Ubuntu 14.04 derivative systems.

Because it is not available via PPA, the needed deb packages of Kernel 3.16.1 are available via kernel.ubuntu.com. Follow the instructions for your system’s architecture exactly, in order to get a successful installation.

How to install Kernel 3.16.1 on 32 bit Ubuntu 14.04 and derivative systems:

Download the needed packages:

$ cd /tmp
$ wget \
kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.16.1-utopic/linux-headers-3.16.1-031601_3.16.1-031601.201408140014_all.deb \
kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.16.1-utopic/linux-headers-3.16.1-031601-generic_3.16.1-031601.201408140014_i386.deb \
kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.16.1-utopic/linux-image-3.16.1-031601-generic_3.16.1-031601.201408140014_i386.deb

Install Kernel 3.16.1:

$ sudo dpkg -i linux-headers-3.16*.deb linux-image-3.16*.deb

After the kernel has been successfully installed, reboot and choose it at boot:

$ sudo reboot

Optional, remove the kernel:

$ sudo apt-get remove linux-header-3.16* linux-image-3.16*

How to install Kernel 3.16.1 on 64 bit Ubuntu 14.04 and derivative systems:

Download the needed packages:

$ cd /tmp
$ wget \
kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.16.1-utopic/linux-headers-3.16.1-031601_3.16.1-031601.201408140014_all.deb \
kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.16.1-utopic/linux-headers-3.16.1-031601-generic_3.16.1-031601.201408140014_amd64.deb \
kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.16.1-utopic/linux-image-3.16.1-031601-generic_3.16.1-031601.201408140014_amd64.deb

Install Kernel 3.16.1:

$ sudo dpkg -i linux-headers-3.16*.deb linux-image-3.16*.deb

After the kernel has been successfully installed, reboot and choose it at boot:

$ sudo reboot

$ sudo apt-get remove linux-header-3.16* linux-image-3.16*

    Error! Bad return status for module build on kernel: 3.16.1-031601-generic (i686)
    Consult /var/lib/dkms/bcmwl/6.30.223.141+bdcom/build/make.log for more information.

    Looks like elementary any version will not accept anything above 3.14.4. Also, the 3.14.4 version gives some errors in Freya, although seems to work OK. All in all, better to stay with stock kernel in Freya and update when is backported through update manager. In Luna, I have had success exactly up to 3.14.4.4. Everything above will not load.
