How To Install Kernel 3.17 RC2 On Ubuntu 14.10, Ubuntu 14.04 And Derivative Systems

Hello Linux Geeksters. While Kernel 3.16 (which will be used by default on Fedora 21, Debian Jessie and Ubuntu 14.10) is the most advanced stable kernel available, Kernel 3.17 RC2 has been released by Linus Torvalds, on the 25th of August, the day matching the 23rd anniversary of the Linux Kernel.

Among others, the new kernel patch got driver updates for DRM, networking, hid, sound, PCI, filesystem improvements for cifs, isofs and nfs and some  architecture enhancements.

In this article I will show you how to install Kernel 3.17 RC2 on Ubuntu 14.10 Utopic Unicorn, Ubuntu 14.04 Trusy Tahr, Linux Mint 17 Qiana, Pinguy OS 14.04, LXLE 14.04, Peppermint Five, Deepin 2014, Linux Lite 2.0, Elementary OS 0.3 Freya and other Ubuntu 14.04 derivative systems.

Because it is not available via PPA, the needed deb packages of Kernel 3.17 RC2 are available via kernel.ubuntu.com. Follow the instructions for your system’s architecture exactly, in order to get a successful installation.

How to install Kernel 3.17 RC2 on 32 bit Ubuntu 14.10, Ubuntu 14.04 and derivative systems:

Download the needed packages:

$ cd /tmp
$ wget \
kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.17-rc2-utopic/linux-headers-3.17.0-031700rc2_3.17.0-031700rc2.201408251935_all.deb \
kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.17-rc2-utopic/linux-headers-3.17.0-031700rc2-generic_3.17.0-031700rc2.201408251935_i386.deb \
kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.17-rc2-utopic/linux-image-3.17.0-031700rc2-generic_3.17.0-031700rc2.201408251935_i386.deb

Install Kernel 3.17 RC 2:

$ sudo dpkg -i linux-headers-3.17*.deb linux-image-3.17*.deb

After the kernel has been successfully installed, reboot and choose it at boot:

$ sudo reboot

Optional, remove the kernel:

$ sudo apt-get remove linux-header-3.17* linux-image-3.17*

How to install Kernel 3.17 RC2 on 64 bit Ubuntu 14.10, Ubuntu 14.04 and derivative systems:

Download the needed packages:

$ cd /tmp
$ wget \
kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.17-rc2-utopic/linux-headers-3.17.0-031700rc2_3.17.0-031700rc2.201408251935_all.deb \
kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.17-rc2-utopic/linux-headers-3.17.0-031700rc2-generic_3.17.0-031700rc2.201408251935_amd64.deb \
kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.17-rc2-utopic/linux-image-3.17.0-031700rc2-generic_3.17.0-031700rc2.201408251935_amd64.deb

Install Kernel 3.17 RC2:

$ sudo dpkg -i linux-headers-3.17*.deb linux-image-3.17*.deb

After the kernel has been successfully installed, reboot and choose it at boot:

$ sudo apt-get remove linux-header-3.17* linux-image-3.17*
