How To Install Kernel 3.17 RC6 On On Ubuntu 14.10, Ubuntu 14.04 And Derivative Systems

Hello Linux Geeksters. As you may know, Kernel 3.17 RC6 has been recently released. Most likely, this is the latest RC version from the Kernel 3.17 series and the stable version of the kernel may become available next week.

In this article I will show you how to install Kernel 3.17 RC6 on Ubuntu 14.10 Utopic Unicorn, Ubuntu 14.04 Trusy Tahr, Linux Mint 17 Qiana, Pinguy OS 14.04, LXLE 14.04, Peppermint Five, Deepin 2014, Linux Lite 2.0, Elementary OS 0.3 Freya and other Ubuntu 14.04 derivative systems.

Because it is not available via PPA, the needed deb packages of Kernel 3.17 RC6 are available via kernel.ubuntu.com. Follow the instructions for your system’s architecture exactly, in order to get a successful installation.

How to install Kernel 3.17 RC6 on 32 bit Ubuntu 14.10, Ubuntu 14.04 and derivative systems:

Download the needed packages:

$ cd /tmp
$ wget \
kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.17-rc6-utopic/linux-headers-3.17.0-031700rc6_3.17.0-031700rc6.201409211935_all.deb \
kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.17-rc6-utopic/linux-headers-3.17.0-031700rc6-generic_3.17.0-031700rc6.201409211935_i386.deb \
kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.17-rc6-utopic/linux-image-3.17.0-031700rc6-generic_3.17.0-031700rc6.201409211935_i386.deb

Install Kernel 3.17 RC 6:

$ sudo dpkg -i linux-headers-3.17*.deb linux-image-3.17*.deb

After the kernel has been successfully installed, reboot:

$ sudo reboot

Optional, remove the kernel:

$ sudo apt-get remove linux-header-3.17* linux-image-3.17*

How to install Kernel 3.17 RC6 on 64 bit Ubuntu 14.10, Ubuntu 14.04 and derivative systems:

Download the needed packages:

$ cd /tmp
$ wget \
kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.17-rc6-utopic/linux-headers-3.17.0-031700rc6_3.17.0-031700rc6.201409211935_all.deb \

Install Kernel 3.17 RC 6:

$ sudo dpkg -i linux-headers-3.17*.deb linux-image-3.17*.deb

After the kernel has been successfully installed, reboot:

$ sudo reboot

Optional, remove the kernel:

$ sudo apt-get remove linux-header-3.17* linux-image-3.17*
