How To Install Kernel 3.18 RC1 On Ubuntu 14.10, Ubuntu 14.04 And Derivatives

Hello Linux Geeksters. As you may know, Kernel 3.18 RC1 has been recently released, coming with changes. Despite the fact that it should have been released next week, the developers have already sent in their changes and so, it would have been pointless to hold it up until next week.

how to install Kernel 3.18 RC 1  on Ubuntu 14.10 Utopic Unicorn, Ubuntu 14.04 Trusy Tahr, Linux Mint 17 Qiana, Pinguy OS 14.04, LXLE 14.04, Peppermint Five, Deepin 2014, Linux Lite 2.0, Elementary OS 0.3 Freya

In this article I will show you how to install Kernel 3.18 RC 1  on Ubuntu 14.10 Utopic Unicorn, Ubuntu 14.04 Trusy Tahr, Linux Mint 17 Qiana, Pinguy OS 14.04, LXLE 14.04, Peppermint Five, Deepin 2014, Linux Lite 2.0, Elementary OS 0.3 Freya and other Ubuntu 14.04 derivative systems.

Because it is not available via PPA, the needed deb packages of Kernel 3.18 RC1 are available via kernel.ubuntu.com. Follow the instructions for your system’s architecture exactly, in order to get a successful installation.

How to install Kernel 3.18 RC1 on 32 bit Ubuntu 14.10, Ubuntu 14.04 and derivative systems:

Download the needed packages:

$ cd /tmp
$ wget \
kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.18-rc1-utopic/linux-headers-3.18.0-031800rc1_3.18.0-031800rc1.201410192135_all.deb \
kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.18-rc1-utopic/linux-headers-3.18.0-031800rc1-generic_3.18.0-031800rc1.201410192135_i386.deb \
kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.18-rc1-utopic/linux-image-3.18.0-031800rc1-generic_3.18.0-031800rc1.201410192135_i386.deb

Install Kernel 3.18 RC1:

$ sudo dpkg -i linux-headers-3.18*.deb linux-image-3.18*.deb

After the kernel has been successfully installed, reboot:

$ sudo reboot

Optional, remove the kernel:

$ sudo apt-get remove linux-header-3.18* linux-image-3.18*

How to install Kernel 3.18 RC1 on 64 bit Ubuntu 14.10, Ubuntu 14.04 and derivative systems:

Download the needed packages:

$ cd /tmp
$ wget \
kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.18-rc1-utopic/linux-headers-3.18.0-031800rc1_3.18.0-031800rc1.201410192135_all.deb \
kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.18-rc1-utopic/linux-headers-3.18.0-031800rc1-generic_3.18.0-031800rc1.201410192135_amd64.deb \
kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.18-rc1-utopic/linux-image-3.18.0-031800rc1-generic_3.18.0-031800rc1.201410192135_amd64.deb

Install Kernel 3.18 RC1:

$ sudo dpkg -i linux-headers-3.18*.deb linux-image-3.18*.deb

After the kernel has been successfully installed, reboot:

$ sudo reboot

Optional, remove the kernel:

$ sudo apt-get remove linux-header-3.18* linux-image-3.18*
