How To Install MKVToolNix 7.0 On Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Pinguy OS, Elementary OS, LXLE, Debian, Fedora, CentOS And OpenSUSE Systems

Hello Linux Geeksters. As you may know, MKVToolNix is a Matroska (mkv) multimedia manipulation tool pack. You can edit mkv video files, split files, sync audio with video. The latest version available is mkvmerge GUI MKVToolnix 6.8.0, which has been recently released, coming with a lot of bug-fixes and support for h.265/HEVC video.

It contains the following command-line tools:

  • mkvmerge – a tool for creating Matroska files from other formats
  • mkvinfo – a tool that the users to get information about the tracks in a Matroska file
  • mkvextract – a tool that extracts tracks from Matroska files to other formats

The latest version available is MKVToolNix 7.0, which has been recently released.

In this article I will show you how to install MKVToolNix 7.0 on Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty Tahr, Ubuntu 13.10 Saucy Salamander, Ubuntu 12.04 Precise Pangolin, Linux Mint 17 Qiana, Linux Mint 16 Petra, Linux Mint 13 Maya, Pinguy OS 14.04, Pinguy OS 12.04, Elementary OS 0.3 Freya, Elementary OS 0.2 Luna, LXLE 14.04, Debian Wheezy, Fedora 20, Fedora 19, CentOS 6, Opensuse 13.1 and OpenSUSE 12.3.

Follow the instructions for your system and architecture exactly, in order to get a successful installation.

How to install MKVToolNix 7.0 on Ubuntu 14.04, Linux Mint 17, LXLE 14.04, Elementary OS 0.3 and Pinguy OS 14.04 systems:

$ sudo sh -c 'echo "deb http://www.bunkus.org/ubuntu/trusty/ ./" >> /etc/apt.sources.list'
$ sudo sh -c 'echo "deb-src http://www.bunkus.org/ubuntu/trusty/ ./" >> /etc/apt.sources.list'
$ wget -O - http://www.bunkus.org/gpg-pub-moritzbunkus.txt | sudo apt-key add -
$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get install mkvtoolnix mkvtoolnix-gui

Optional, to remove mkvtoolnix and mkvtoolnix-gui, do:

$ sudo apt-get remove mkvtoolnix mkvtoolnix-gui

Optional, to remove mkvtoolnix, do:

$ sudo yum remove mkvtoolnix

How to install MKVToolNix 7.0 on CentOS 6:

$ sudo yum update

Instructions for 64 bit systems:
