How To Install MPV On Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty Tahr, Ubuntu 13.10 Saucy Salamander And Linux Mint 16 Petra

Hello Linux Geeksters. As you may know, MPlayer 2 has died about an year ago, but some third party developers forked it into MPV, in order to provide the functionality of the good old MPlayer, but with greater VDPAU support, for Nvidia graphics cards.

In this article I will show you how to install MPV on Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty Tahr, Ubuntu 13.10 Saucy Salamander, and Linux Mint 16.

Because it is available via PPA, installing MPV on the listed Ubuntu and Linux Mint systems is easy. All you have to do is install mplayer2 from the default repos, add the ppa to your system, update the local repository index and install the mpv package. Like this:

$ sudo apt-get install mplayer2
$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:mc3man/mpv-tests
$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get install mpv
