But Mutter can also be used with other desktop environments, like Cinnamon or Mate. The latest highly unstable version available is Mutter 3.9.90 (Mutter 3.10 Beta 1).

In this article I will show you how to install Mutter 3.9.90 (Mutter 3.10 Beta 1) on Ubuntu 13.10 Saucy Salamander, Ubuntu 13.04 Raring Ringtail, Linux Mint 16 Petra and Linux Mint 15 Olivia.

Because it is available via PPA, installing Mutter 3.9.90 (Mutter 3.10 Beta 1) on Ubuntu and Linux Mint is easy. All you have to do is:

Add the needed repositories:

$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gnome3-team/gnome3
$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gnome3-team/gnome3-staging
$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ricotz/testing

Update the local repository index:

$ sudo apt-get update

Install Mutter 3.9.90 on Ubuntu and Linux Mint:

$ sudo apt-get install mutter
