How To Install Otter Browser 0.9.0.3 On Ubuntu 14.10, Ubuntu 14.04 And Derivative Systems

Hello Linux Geeksters. As you may know, the Otter Browser is an open source lightweight internet browser, similar to the good old Opera 12 Browser, with a interface developed in Qt5 and WebKit.

The third beta version of the Otter browser (Otter 0.9.03) has been released for Linux, coming with the below changes:

  • initial version of sidebar;
  • added initial versions of Website Preferences and Quick Preferences (F12);
  • added Trash to Bookmarks Manager;
  • added Ctrl+Tab tabs switching;
  • added option to set user style sheet;
  • added tray icon;
  • allow to customize menu bar (JSON file);
  • various minor fixes and improvements.

In this article I will show you how to install Otter Browser 0.9.03 (Otter Browser Beta 3) on Ubuntu 14.10 Utopic Unicorn, Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty Tahr, Linux Mint 17.1 Rebecca, Linux Mint 17 Qiana, Pinguy OS 14.04, Elementary OS 0.3 Freya, LXLE 14.04, Linux Lite 2.0, Deepin 2014, Peppermint Five and other Ubuntu 14.10 and Ubuntu 14.04 derivative systems.

Because it is not available via PPA, we have to download the otter deb packages from sourceforge and install them via command-line. Follow the instructions for your system’s architecture exactly, in order to get a successful installation.

How to install Otter Browser Beta 3 (Otter 0.9.03) on 32 bit Ubuntu 14.10, Ubuntu 14.04 and derivative systems:

$ sudo apt-get install gdebi
$ wget sourceforge.net/projects/otter-browser/files/otter-browser-beta3/otter-browser_0.9.03_i386.deb
$ sudo gdebi otter-browser_0.9.03_i386.deb

How to install Otter Browser Beta 1 (Otter 0.9.03) on 64 bit Ubuntu 14.10, Ubuntu 14.04 and derivative systems:

$ sudo apt-get install gdebi
$ wget sourceforge.net/projects/otter-browser/files/otter-browser-beta3/otter-browser_0.9.03_amd64.deb
$ sudo gdebi otter-browser_0.9.03_amd64.deb

Optional, to remove otter-browser, from either 32 bit and 64 bit Ubuntu or a derivative system, do:

$ sudo apt-get remove otter-browser
