Hello Linux Geeksters. As you may know, PeaZip is an open source archive manager, available for both Linux and Windows. It has support for more that 150 archive types, including the popular: 7Z, TGZ, BZ2, XZ, ZIP, RAR and many others. The latest version available is PeaZip 5.3.1, coming only with some corrections to the previous version. For information about this release, see the project’s page.

In this article I will show you how to install PeaZip 5.3.1 on Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty Tahr, Linux Mint 17 Qiana, Elementary OS 0.3 Isis and Pinguy OS 14.04.

Because it is not available via any repository or PPA, we have to download the packages from the project’s page and install them via the command-line. Follow the instructions for your architecture exactly, in order to get a successful installation.

How to install PeaZip 5.3.1 on 32 bit Ubuntu 14.04, Linux Mint 17, Elementary OS 0.3 and Pinguy OS 14.04 systems:

For 32 Ubuntu and derivative systems, PeaZip is available as deb package, so installing it is quite simple. Just do:

$ wget sourceforge.net/projects/peazip/files/5.3.1/peazip_5.3.1.LINUX.Qt-2_i386.deb
$ sudo apt-get install gdebi
$ sudo gdebi peazip_5.3.1.LINUX.Qt-2_i386.deb

Optional, to remove peazip, do:

$ sudo apt-get remove peazip*

How to install PeaZip 5.3.1 on 64 bit Ubuntu 14.04, Linux Mint 17, Elementary OS 0.3 and Pinguy OS 14.04 systems:

Because there is no package for 64 bit Ubuntu and derivative system, we have to get the portal version of Peazip, extract the archive and run the peazip file. Like this:

$ wget sourceforge.net/projects/peazip/files/5.3.1/peazip_portable-5.3.1.LINUX.Qt.tar.gz
$ tar -xzvf peazip_portable-5.3.1.LINUX.Qt.tar.gz
$ sudo rm -rf /opt/peazip*
$ sudo mv peazip_portable-5.3.1.LINUX.Qt /opt/peazip
$ sudo ln -sf /opt/peazip /usr/bin/peazip

Optional, to remove peazip, do:

$ sudo rm -rf /opt/peazip /usr/bin/peazip

    The i386.deb installation fails with a missing lib on Debian 7. I had to use the portable version 🙁
