How To Install Pithos On Ubuntu 14.10, Ubuntu 14.04, Fedora 20 And Derivative Systems

Hello Linux Geeksters. As you may know, Pithos is a client of the Pandora.com music, which service available in USA, Australia and New Zealand only. Starting with Pithos 1.0, the app has been ported to GTK3, Python3 and GSreamer 1.0.

The latest version available is Pithos 1.0.1, which has been released a while ago, coming with the below changes:

  • New upstream release
  • rules: use “–buildsystem=pybuild”
  • removed debian/install
  • control: bumped Standards-Version to 3.9.5
  • control: build-depend on python3-setuptools
  • control: depend on gir1.2-gst-plugins-base-1.0
  • format: use quilt

In this article I will show you how to install Pithos 1.0.1 (Pandora client) on Ubuntu 14.10 Utopic Unicorn, Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty Tahr, Linux Mint 17 Qiana, Pinguy OS 14.04, Elementary OS 0.3 Freya, Deepin 2014, Peppermint Five, LXLE 14.04, Linux Lite 2.0 and Fedora 20.

Because it is available via PPA, installing Pithos 1.0.1 on the listed Ubuntu 14.10, Ubuntu 14.04 and systems is easy. All you have to do is add the ppa to your system, update the local repository index and install the pithos package. Like this:

$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:pithos/ppa
$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get install pithos

Optional, to remove pithos, do:

$ sudo apt-get remove pithos

For Fedora 20, Pithos 1.0 is available via the RPM Fusion Repository. To install it, just do:

$ sudo rpm -Uvh http://download1.rpmfusion.org/free/fedora/rpmfusion-free-release-20.noarch.rpm
$ sudo rpm -Uvh http://download1.rpmfusion.org/nonfree/fedora/rpmfusion-nonfree-release-20.noarch.rpm
$ sudo yum update
$ sudo yum install pithos

Optional, to remove pithos, do:

$ sudo yum remove pithos
