How To Install Shotwell 0.18.1 On Ubuntu 14.04, Ubuntu 13.10 And Derivative Systems

Hello Linux Geeksters. As you may know, Shotwell is the default photo manager/organizer on Ubuntu and Fedora. The latest version available is Shotwell 0.18.1, which comes with the below new features/fixes:

  • Fix Flickr publishing errors due to Flickr moving to HTTPs-only
  • Fix crash when updating photo data/time
  • Fix crash due to nested tag and changing sidebar selection
  • Corrected URLs to point to new gnome.org pages

In this article I will show you how to install Shotwell 0.18.1 on Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty Tahr, Ubuntu 13.10 Saucy Salamander, Linux Mint 17 Qiana, Linux Mint 16 Petra, Pinguy OS 14.04, Pinguy OS 12.04, LXLE 14.04, Elementary OS 0.3 Freya, Elementary OS 0.2 Luna, Peppermint Five, Linux Lite 2.0 and other Ubuntu derivatives.

Because it is available via PPA, installing Shotwell 0.18.1 on Ubuntu 14.04, Ubuntu 13.10 and derivative systems is easy. All you have to do is add the ppa to your system, update the local repository index and install the shotwell package. Like this:

First, remove the previous versions of shotwell:

$ sudo apt-get remove --purge shotwell shotwell-common

Install shotwell:

$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:yorba/ppa
$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get install shotwell

Optional, to remove shotwell, do:

$ sudo apt-get remove shotwell*
