How To Install Snes9x 1.53.903 On Ubuntu 14.10, Ubuntu 14.04 And Derivative Systems

Hello Linux Geeksters. As you may know, Snes9x is a freeware Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) emulator written in C++, allowing users to play Nintendo games on their Linux systems.

Main features:

  • Good compatibility with almost all known ROMs SNES
  • Gamepad support
  • Support saving
  • Assigning hotkeys
  • Ability to take screenshots
  • Recording and playback of passages in the format .smv
  • The SuperEagle filter, Scanlines, etc.

The latest version available is Snes9x 1.53.903, which has been released a while ago.

In this article I will show you how to install Snes9x 1.53.903 on Ubuntu 14.10 Utopic Unicorn, Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty Tahr, Linux Mint 17.1 Rebecca, Pinguy OS 14.04, Elementary OS 0.3 Freya, Deepin 2014, Peppermint Five, LXLE 14.04, Linux Lite 2 and other Ubuntu 14.10, Ubuntu 14.04 and derivative systems.

To install Snes9x 1.53.903  on Ubuntu 14.10, Ubuntu 14.04 and derivative systems, you have to download the deb package from launchpad and install it via command-line. I prefer gdebi over dpkg, due to the fact that it also handles dependencies.

How to install Snes9x 1.53.903 on 32 bit Ubuntu 14.10, Ubuntu 14.04 and derivative systems:

$ sudo apt-get install gdebi
$ wget "https://launchpad.net/~bearoso/+archive/ubuntu/ppa/+files/snes9x-gtk_1.53.903.81%7Etrusty1_i386.deb" -O snes9x-gtk_1.53.903.81_i386.deb
$ sudo gdebi snes9x-gtk_1.53.903.81_i386.deb

How to install Snes9x 1.53.903 on 64 bit Ubuntu 14.10, Ubuntu 14.04 and derivative systems:

$ sudo apt-get install gdebi
$ wget "https://launchpad.net/~bearoso/+archive/ubuntu/ppa/+files/snes9x-gtk_1.53.903.81%7Etrusty1_amd64.deb" -O snes9x-gtk_1.53.903.81_amd64.deb
$ sudo gdebi snes9x-gtk_1.53.903.81_amd64.deb

Optional, to remove snes9x, do:

$ sudo apt-get remove snes9x
