How To Install Terminology 0.8.0 On Ubuntu 14.10, Ubuntu 14.04, Ubuntu 12.04 And Derivative Systems

Hello Linux Geeksters. As you may know, Terminology is the terminal emulator from the Enlightenment desktop environment, having the main functions of any terminal emulator: support for backgrounds, themes for the layout and design, support for both X11 and Wayland, multiple tabs, support for block text selection and link handling and path and email address detection.

The latest version available is Terminology 0.8.0, part of the Enlightenment 19 desktop, been released a while ago, bringing changes, including:

  • Most escapes supported by xterm, rxvt etc. work
  • Xterm 256 color escapes work
  • Backgrounds (bitmap, scalable/vector, animated gif, videos)
  • Transparency
  • Bitmap and scalable fonts supported
  • Themes for the layout and design
  • URL, file path and email address detection and link-handling
  • Inline display of link content
  • Multiple copy and paste selections and buffer support
  • Works in X11
  • Works in Wayland
  • Works directly in the linux framebuffer (fbcon)
  • Can be finger/touch controlled
  • Scan scale by UI scaling factors
  • Can render using OpenGL or OpenGL-ES2 (not a requirement – just an option)
  • Can display inlined media content (images, video, documents)
  • Can do multiple “tabs”
  • Can do splitting into multiple panes

  • Single process, multiple windows/terminals support

how to install Terminology 0.8.0 on Ubuntu 14.10 Utopic Unicorn, Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty Tahr, Ubuntu 12.04 Precise Pangolin and their derivative systems, including: Linux Mint 17.1 Rebecca, Linux Mint 17 Qiana, Linux Mint 13 Maya, Pinguy OS 14.04, Elementary OS 0.3 Freya, Elementary OS 0.2 Luna, Peppermint Five, Linux Lite 2, LXLE 14.04 and Deepin 2014.

In this article I will show you how to install Terminology 0.8.0 on Ubuntu 14.10 Utopic Unicorn, Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty Tahr, Ubuntu 12.04 Precise Pangolin and their derivative systems, including: Linux Mint 17.1 Rebecca, Linux Mint 17 Qiana, Linux Mint 13 Maya, Pinguy OS 14.04, Elementary OS 0.3 Freya, Elementary OS 0.2 Luna, Peppermint Five, Linux Lite 2, LXLE 14.04 and Deepin 2014.

Because it is available via PPA, installing Terminology 0.8.0 on Ubuntu 14.10, Ubuntu 14.04, Ubuntu 12.04 and derivative systems is easy. All you have to do is add the PPA to your system, update the local repository index and install the terminology package. Like this:

$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:niko2040/e19
$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get install terminology

Optional, to remove terminology, do:

$ sudo apt-get remove terminology
