In this article I will show you how to install Thunderbird 31.6.0 on Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Elementary OS, Pinguy OS, LXLE, Deepin, Linux Lite, Peppermint, Debian, Kwheezy, SparkyLinux, Fedora, CentOS, OpenSUSE, Mageia, OpenMandriva, Manjaro, Arch Linux and other popular Linux systems.

Because Thunderbird 31.6.0 is not available via any repository yet, we have to download Thunderbird 31.6.0 from the official ite site, extract the archive, move to /opt and alias the launcher.

Follow the instructions for your system’s architecture exactly, in order to get a successful installation.

$ tar -xjvf thunderbird-31.6.0.tar.bz2
$ sudo rm -rf /opt/thunderbird*
$ sudo mv thunderbird /opt/thunderbird
$ sudo ln -sf /opt/thunderbird/thunderbird /usr/bin/thunderbird

To start Thunderbird, just open a terminal, type thunderbird and hit enter.

How to install Thunderbird 31.6 on 64 bit Ubuntu, Debian CentOS, OpenSUSE, Mageia, OpenMandriva, Arch Linux and derivative systems:

$ wget ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/thunderbird/releases/31.6.0/linux-x86_64/en-US/thunderbird-31.6.0.tar.bz2
$ tar -xjvf thunderbird-31.6.0.tar.bz2
$ sudo rm -rf /opt/thunderbird*
$ sudo mv thunderbird /opt/thunderbird
$ sudo ln -sf /opt/thunderbird/thunderbird /usr/bin/thunderbird

To start Thunderbird, just open a terminal, type thunderbird and hit enter.

Note: This will replace the version of Thunderbird you have already on your system with Thunderbird 31.6.
