How To Install Variety On Ubuntu 14.04, Linux Mint 17 And Their Derivative Systems

Hello Linux Geeksters. As you may know, Variety is an app indicator that changes the desktop wallpaper, using automatically downloaded images from: Wallbase, Flickr, Wallpapers.net, Desktoppr, NASA Astronomy Picture of the Day.

It works well on the most popular desktop environments: Unity, Gnome Shell, KDE, XFCE, LXDE, Cinnamon, Mate and Pantheon. The latest Variety version, Variety 0.4.18, got support for Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty Tahr and its derivative systems and brought the quotes back. Now, the quotes come from TheQuotationsPage.com, Goodreads, QuotesDaddy and from local files.

Being an app indicator, it can be easily paused and resumed from the Unity panel. The user can use its mouse wheel to scroll up and down in the picture list, in order to choose the perfect image for its mood.

In this article I will show you how to install Variety 0.4.18 on Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty Tahr, Pinguy OS 14.04, Linux Mint 17 Qiana and Elementary OS 0.3 Isis.

Because it is available via PPA, installing Variety 0.4.17 on Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Elementary OS and Pear OS is easy. All you have to do is add the ppa, update the local repository index and install the variety package. Like this:

$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:peterlevi/ppa
$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get install variety

Optional, to remove variety, do:

$ sudo apt-get remove variety
