How To Install Virtualbox 4.3.20 On Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, OpenSUSE And Derivatives

Hello Linux Geeksters. As you may know, Virtualbox is an free , multi-platform virtualization software created by Oracle, being popular on Linux, Windows and Mac OS X. The latest version available is Virtualbox 4.3.20, which has been recently released, coming with the below changes:

  • VMM: fixed reboot hang of 32-bit Windows SMP guests
  • VMM: proper Math Fault handling with certain legacy guests
  • VMM: fixed a Guru Meditation VINF_EM_TRIPLE_FAULT on older CPUs that don’t support MSR-bitmaps
  • GUI: fix 3D overlay window re-parenting issue when VM goes to full screen mode on X11 hosts.
  • GUI: fix occasional loss of focus in full-screen mode on X11 host systems (4.3.16 regression)
  • GUI: Mac OS X: wizards should have Cancel button
  • GUI: added a global option to prevent automatic raising of the new window by mouse move with multi-screen guests
  • API: accept remote display port 0 as the default RDP port
  • VBoxManage: fixed crash when executing showvminfo command under certain circumstances
  • ACPI: fixed occasional Guru Meditations in ACPI timer code
  • EFI: improved performance of IDE disk access
  • EFI: fixed a bug in the EFI video driver which prevented Windows to boot in UEFI mode
  • EFI: properly announce the amount of RAM for big VMs
  • Storage: fixed a crash under certain circumstances when a medium was ejected from a drive attached to the SATA controller without inserting a new medium before pausing or closing the VM (4.3.16 regression)
  • Storage: fixed an interrupt acknowledge issue causing hanging guests or slower I/O (4.3.18 regression)
  • Storage: fixed broken resume after the VM was suspended due to a full disk if host I/O caching is used
  • Storage: fixed a Guru Meditation under certain conditions when using the DevLsiLogic controller with VMs running in raw mode
  • Guest Control: fixed a bug which might lead to a crash during recursive copy
  • SDK: Java COM bindings fixes
  • iPXE: enable the HTTP download protocol
  • Runtime: do not use a fixed stack size creating temporary threads during initialization
  • Windows hosts: fixed DirectSound host audio failure under certain conditions
  • Windows hosts: fixed additional cases of 4.3.14 regression whereby AltGr stopped working for some people
  • Linux Additions: Linux 3.18 compile fixes

In this article I will show you how to install Virtualbox 4.3.20 on Ubuntu 14.10 Utopic Unicorn, Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty Tahr, Ubuntu 12.04 Precise Pangolin, Linux Mint 17.1 Rebecca, Linux Mint 17 Qiana, Linux Mint 13 Maya, Elementary OS 0.3 Freya, Elementary OS 0.2 Luna, Pinguy OS 14.04, Linux Lite 2.0, LXLE 14.04, Deepin 2014, Peppermint Five, Debian Wheezy, OpenSUSE 13.2, OpenSUSE 13.1, OpenSUSE 12.3, Fedora 20 and Fedora 19.

How to install Virtualbox 4.3.20 on Ubuntu 14.10, Ubuntu 14.04, Pinguy OS 14.04, LXLE 14.04, Linux Mint 17.1, Linux Mint 17, Linux Lite 2.0, Deepin 2014, Peppermint Five and Elementary OS 0.3:

$ sudo sh -c 'echo "deb http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian trusty contrib" >> /etc/apt/sources.list'
$ wget http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian/oracle_vbox.asc -O- | sudo apt-key add -
$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get install virtualbox-4.3

How to install Virtualbox 4.3.20 on Ubuntu 12.04, Linux Mint 13, Pinguy OS 12.04 and Elementary OS 0.2 :

$ sudo sh -c 'echo "deb http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian precise contrib" >> /etc/apt/sources.list'
$ wget http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian/oracle_vbox.asc -O- | sudo apt-key add -
$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get install virtualbox-4.3

How to install Virtualbox 4.3.20 on Debian Wheezy:

$ sudo sh -c 'echo "deb http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian wheezy contrib" >> /etc/apt/sources.list'
$ wget http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian/oracle_vbox.asc -O- | sudo apt-key add -
$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get install virtualbox-4.3

Optional, to remove Virtualbox 4.3.20, from either Ubuntu, Debian or a derivative system, do:

$ sudo apt-get remove virtualbox-4.3

How to install Virtualbox 4.3.20 on OpenSUSE 13.2, OpenSUSE 13.1 and OpenSUSE 12.3:

$ cd /etc/zypp/repos.d/
$ sudo wget http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/rpm/opensuse/12.3/virtualbox.repo
$ sudo zypper refresh
$ sudo zypper virtualbox-4.3

Optional, to remove Virtualbox 4.3.20 from OpenSUSE systems, do:

$ sudo zypper remove virtualb0x-4.3

How to install Virtualbox 4.3.20 on Fedora 20 and Fedora 19:

$ cd /etc/yum.repos.d/
$ sudo wget http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/rpm/fedora/virtualbox.repo
$ sudo yum update
$ sudo yum install virtualbox-4.3

Optional, to remove Virtualbox 4.3.20 from Fedora systems, do:

$ sudo yum remove virtualb0x-4.3
