How To Install Virtualbox 5.0 Beta 2 On Ubuntu 14.10, Ubuntu 14.04, Ubuntu 12.04, Debian 8, Debian 7 And Derivative Systems

Hello Linux Geeksters. As you may know, Virtualbox is an free , multi-platform virtualization software created by Oracle, being popular on Linux, Windows and Mac OS X. The latest version available is Virtualbox 5.0 Beta 2, which has been released with a huge list of changes.

Changes:

  • VMM: added support for using paravirtualization providers with raw-mode VMs
  • GUI: encryption passwords no more centered
  • GUI: canceling encryption password prompt at VM startup proposing to close VM
  • GUI: Enter/Return key press for the last (or single) entry of the encryption password prompt accepts the dialog
  • GUI: VM menu-bar contents reordering – moving some of unusual for the Help menu stuff into separate File menu
  • GUI: scaling support will use the old smooth mechanism for the software renderer case
  • GUI: optimized medium enumeration for the large differencing trees
  • GUI: USB controller types for the given VM are now reflected in VM details pane
  • GUI: avoid error message during shutdown of a separate VM
  • GUI: fixed a rare crash when starting VM in separate mode
  • Drag and drop: fixed a crash when copying over host elements to the guest
  • Audio: don’t crash when attaching via RDP to a VM with disabled audio
  • Input: fixed vertical scrolling and buttons 4/5 in PS/2 !ImEx protocol
  • 3D: fix crash on restoring state on X11 hosts
  • Bridged Networking: avoid host networking stack pause/restart on VM start/stop/pause
  • API: fixed too strict condition for changing extradata settings of newly created VMs
  • API: fixed too strict condition for creating persistent shared folders
  • rdesktop-vrdp: upgraded to version 1.8.3
  • BIOS: fix for booting from SCSI CD/DVD media
  • BIOS: fix for reads partially beyond end of disk
  • Linux Additions: fix for Linux guest kernels < 2.6.13 (e.g. RHEL4; see here)
  • Added serial port forwarding via TCP socket

In this article I will show you how to install Virtualbox 5.0 Beta 2 on Ubuntu 14.10 Utopic Unicorn, Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty Tahr, Ubuntu 12.04 Precise Pangolin, Linux Mint 17.1 Rebecca, Linux Mint 13 Maya, Pinguy OS 14.04, Elementary OS 0.3 Freya, Elementary OS 0.2 Luna, Deepin 2014, Peppermint Five, LXLE 14.04, Linux Lite 2, Debian 8 Jessie, Debian 7 Wheezy and other Ubuntu and Derivative derivative systems.

In order to successfully install Virtualbox 5.0 Beta 2 on Ubuntu 14.10, Ubuntu 14.04, Ubuntu 12.04, Debian 8, Debian 7 and derivative systems, we have to download the deb package from the project’s website and install it via command-line. I prefer gdebi over dpkg due to the fact that it also handles dependencies.

Follow the instructions for your system and architecture exactly, in order to get a successful installation.

How to install Virtualbox 5.0 Beta 2 on Ubuntu 14.10, Ubuntu 14.04 and derivative systems:

Instructions for 32 bit systems:

$ sudo apt-get install gdebi
$ wget http://dlc-cdn.sun.com/virtualbox/5.0.0_BETA2/virtualbox-5.0_5.0.0~beta2-99573~Ubuntu~trusty_i386.deb
$ gdebi virtualbox-5.0_5.0.0~beta2-99573~Ubuntu~trusty_i386.deb

Instructions for 64 bit systems:

$ sudo apt-get install gdebi

Instructions for 64 bit systems:

$ sudo apt-get install gdebi

Optional, to remove Virtualbox from either Ubuntu or a derivative system, do:

$ gdebi virtualbox-5.0_5.0.0~beta2-99573~Debian~jessie_i386.deb

Instructions for 64 bit systems:

$ sudo apt-get install gdebi
