How To Install VLC 2.2.0 “Weatherwax” On Ubuntu 15.04, Ubuntu 14.10, Ubuntu 14.04 And Derivative Systems

Hello Linux Geeksters. As you may know, VLC is one of the most popular media players for Linux.

The latest version available is VLC 2.2.0 “Weatherwax”, which has been recently released, bringing a new feature that automatically detects the orientation of video so that you can rotate the video, got support for Digital Cinema Package, improves the Blu Ray native support via libbdplus and comes with improvements on video in Ultra HD.

In this article I will show you how to install VLC 2.2.0 on Ubuntu 15.04 Vivid Vervet, Ubuntu 14.10 Utopic Unicorn, Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty Tahr, Linux Mint 17.1 Rebecca, Linux Mint 17 Qiana, Pinguy OS 14.04, Elementary OS 0.3 Freya, Deepin 2014, Peppermint Five, LXLE 14.04, Linux Lite 2 and other Ubuntu derivative systems.

For Ubuntu 15.04 and Ubuntu 14.10, VLC 2.2.0 is available via the official VideoLan PPA, so installing it is easy. Just do:

$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:videolan/stable-daily
$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get install vlc

In order to get VLC 2.2.0 on Ubuntu 14.04 and derivative systems, we have to install use a third party PPA, like this:

$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:mc3man/trusty-media
$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get install vlc

Optional, to remove vlc, do:

$ sudo apt-get remove vlc
