Follow this steps for a successful installation:

Step 1. Install some dependencies:

$ sudo yum -y install libX11-devel freetype-devel

Step 2. Download wine from sourceforge:

$ wget http://garr.dl.sourceforge.net/project/wine/Source/wine-1.5.28.tar.bz2

Step 3. Extract the archive and cd into it:

$ tar -xvf wine-1.5.28.tar.bz2
$ cd wine-1.5.28/

Step 4. Install wine:

    Great instructions, only one critique. My system has dual processors, 1000 MB ram, decent HD, only–this install is STILL running! I checked my web history to get an idea of when I actually began the install, here is my estimate:
    according to my web history, I found and used your page instructions from 4:19 pm
    Terminal is STILL running and it is 5:27 pm ! YIKES!

    So you may wish to add to this that installing this Wine version on a decent system STILL takes a rather long time! =D
