How To Install X File Explorer (XFE) 1.40 On Ubuntu, Debian And Derivative Systems

Hello Linux Geeksters, As you may know, XFE (X File Explorer) is a file manager similar to Double Commander. Due to the fact that it is desktop environment independent, it can be installed on the most popular DEs, including: Unity, GNOME, KDE, XFCE, Cinnamon, MATE, Pantheon, etc.

The latest version available is XFE 1.40, which has been recently released, coming with the below changes:

  • natural sorting in file lists (thus file name ’10-foo’ comes after file name ‘2-foo’)
  • file comparison (through an external tool that can be selected in the Preferences dialog)
  • Ctrl-C / Ctrl-V on a file ‘foo’ creates the file ‘foo (copy)’. Another Ctrl-C / Ctrl-V creates the file ‘foo (copy 2)’
  • file panels can now be stacked vertically or horizontally, – the XFileView (xfv) application has been removed and replaced with XFileWrite in read-only mode (xfw -r)
  • new file types added to the global xferc configuration file are now automatically copied to the local xferc configuration file – tons of fixed bugs and small improvements
  • german, czech, brazilian portuguese, greek and french translation updates.

Because it is not available via any repository or PPA, we have to download the xfe deb package and install it via command-line. I prefer gdebi over dpkg due to the fact that it also handles dependencies.
