How To Install XNViewMP 0.72 On Ubuntu, Debian And Derivative Systems

Hello Linux Geeksters. As you may know, XnViewMP is a free application for managing digital images, having support for over 500 image formats and a feature for importing images from scanner. The latest version available is XnViewMP 0.72, which has been released a while ago, coming only the below changes:

  • GeoHack url has changed – resolved.
  • Set keyword destroys IPTC metadata on JPEG – resolved.
  • Left/right keys don’t work on last tab – resolved.

In this article I will show you how to install XnViewMP 0.72 on Ubuntu 14.10 Utopic Unicorn, Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty Tahr, Ubuntu 12.04 Precise Pangolin, Linux Mint 17.1 Rebecca, Linux Mint 17 Qiana, Linux Mint 13 Maya, Pinguy OS 14.04, Elementary OS 0.3 Freya, Elmentary OS 0.2 Luna, LXLE 14.04, Peppermint Five, Deepin 2014, Linux Lite 2, Debian 8 Jessie, Debian 7 Wheezy and other Ubuntu and Debian derivative systems.

For Ubuntu 14.10, Ubuntu 14.04 and derivative systems, installing XnViewMP 0.72 on  is easy. All you have to do is add the ppa to your system, update the local repository index and install the xnview package. Like this:

$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:dhor/myway
$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get install xnview

Optional, to remove XnViewMP, do:

$ sudo apt-get install xnview

For Debian 8, Debian 7, Ubuntu 12.04 and derivative systems, you can download  the deb package for your system’s architecture exactly and install it via the command-line. I prefer gdebi over dpkg, due to the fact that it also handles dependencies:

How to install XnViewMP 0.72 on 32 bit Ubuntu and derivative systems:

$ sudo apt-get install gdebi
$ wget download.xnview.com/XnViewMP-linux.deb
$ sudo gdebi XnViewMP-linux.deb

How to install XnViewMP 0.72 on 64 bit Ubuntu and derivative systems:

$ sudo apt-get install gdebi
$ wget download.xnview.com/XnViewMP-linux-x64.deb
$ sudo gdebi XnViewMP-linux-x64.deb

Optional, to remove XnViewMP, do:

$ sudo apt-get install xnviewmp
