How To Install Zotero (Standalone App) 4.0.26 On Ubuntu 14.10, Ubuntu 14.04, Ubuntu 12.04 And Derivative Systems

Hello Linux Geeksters. As you may know, Zotero is a free, cross-platform tool that helps the users collect, organize, cite and share research sources. This software allows the users to add PDFs, images, audio and video content, snapshots of web pages, indexes everything in a library and provides a searchable interface, for an easier organization of data.

It is available as either plugin for LibreOffice, Mozilla Add-on or standalone application. The latest version available is Zotero 4.0.26, which has been released a while ago, bringing changes.

Functionality added or changed:

  • Firefox 36 compatibility
  • Use first 15 pages of PDF (up from 7) when attempting to retrieve metadata
  • Miscellaneous tweaks to Style Editor/Preview windows

Bugs fixed:

  • Fixed “Attach Link via URI”
  • Fixed PDF metadata retrieval in Firefox 31 ESR
  • Continue with default if declining Zotero handling of RIS/BibTex/etc.
  • Don’t require Zotero restart to change RIS/BibTeX handling preference
  • Disable expand/collapse shortcuts when editing collection name inline
  • Fixed sync authentication errors for usernames containing extended characters
  • Use full URL for attachment title if nothing after first slash
  • Fixed OpenURL 0.1 resolver detection
  • Fixed issue with proxied URLs when using Zotero for Firefox in connector mode

In this article I will show you how to install Zotero 4.0.26 (standalone app) on Ubuntu 14.10 Utopic Unicorn, Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty Tahr, Ubuntu 12.04 Precise Pangolin, Linux Mint 17 Qiana, Linux Mint 13 Maya, Pinguy OS 14.04, Elementary OS 0.3 Freya, Elementary OS 0.2 Luna, Deepin 2014, Peppermint Five, LXLE 14.04, Linux Lite 2 and other Ubuntu derivative systems.

Because it is available via PPA, installing Zotero 4.0.26 (standalone app) on Ubuntu 14.10, Ubuntu 14.04, Ubuntu 12.04 and derivative systems is easy. All you have to do is add the ppa to your system, update the local repository index and install the zotero-standalone package. Like this:

$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:smathot/cogscinl
$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get install zotero-standalone

Optional, to remove zotero-standalone, do:

$ sudo apt-get remove zotero-standalone
