How To Install Inkscape 0.91 (Drawing Tool Similar To Adobe Illustrator) On Ubuntu 15.10, Ubuntu 15.04, Ubuntu 14.04 And Derivative Systems

As you may know, Inkscape is an open source drawing tool similar to Adobe Illustrator, using the W3C standard scalable vector graphics format (SVG). The latest stable version available is Inkscape 0.91, which has been recently released.

Release highlights of Inkscape 0.91:

  • cairo rendering for display and PNG export
  • OpenMP multithreading for all filters
  • C++ code conversion
  • type design features
  • a new measure tool
  • cross platform WMF and EMF import and export
  • symbol library and support for Visio stencils
  • improved support for Corel DRAW documents, Visio importer
  • support for real world document and page size units, e.g. millimeters
  • numerous usability improvements

Installation instructions:

Because it is available via PPA, installing Inkscape 0.91 on Ubuntu 15.10 Wily Werewolf, Ubuntu 15.04 Vivid Vervet, Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty Tahr, Linux Mint 17.2 Rafaela, Linux Mint 17.1 Rebecca, Linux Mint 17 Qiana and Elementary OS 0.3 Freya systems  is easy. All you have to do is add the ppa to your system, update the local repository index and install the inkscape package. Like this:

$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:inkscape.dev/stable
$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get install inkscape

Optional, to remove inkscape, do:

$ sudo apt-get remove inkscape
