Install NixNote 2 Beta 5 on Ubuntu 15.10, Ubuntu 14.04 And Derivative Systems

As you may know, Evernote is a popular service for note-taking that has support for saving text, voice memos and video notes. NixNote (former Nevernote) is an unofficial Evernote client for Linux, written in C++ and built using the Qt framework.

The latest version available is NixNote 2 Beta 5, which has been recently released, bringing the below changes:

  • added the ability to email notes;
  • searching will now highlight PDF results;
  • added Print Preview & the ability to only print selected text;
  • notes that are marked as shortcuts are now visible in the tray icon;
  • added the option to use notify-send instead of Qt’s popup notification;
  • a colors.txt file can now be added to customize note background color options;
  • various GUI enhancements.

Installation instructions:

NixNote is not available via any PPA, but the deb packages can be downloaded via sourceforge, so you have to download the deb package for your computer’s architecture and install the package via gdebi, to avoid missing dependencies.

Install NixNote on 32 bit Ubuntu systems:

$ sudo apt-get install gdebi
$ wget http://sourceforge.net/projects/nevernote/files/NixNote2%20-%20Beta%205/nixnote2-2.0-beta5_i386.deb
$ sudo gdebi nixnote2-2.0-beta5_i386.deb

Install NixNote on 64 bit Ubuntu systems:

$ sudo apt-get install gdebi
$ wget http://sourceforge.net/projects/nevernote/files/NixNote2%20-%20Beta%205/nixnote2-2.0-beta5_amd64.deb
$ sudo gdebi nixnote2-2.0-beta5_amd64.deb

Optional, to remove nixnote, do:

$ sudo apt-get remove nixnote*
