Smuxi 1.0 (Open-Source IRC Client) Is Now Available For Ubuntu 16.04 And Ubuntu 15.10 Via PPA

As you may know, Smuxi is an open-source IRC IRC, Twitter, XMPP and JabbR client developed in GTK+3. Among others, it has support for notifications, integrated spell checking, unified nickname colors, browser mode, word completion, full keyboard control, word wrapping, clickable URLs, intentation and full screen mode.

The latest version available is Smuxi 1.0 stable has been finally released, after 10 years of had development. It brings the following changes:

  • SSL IRC connections usually only work on the first try (local engine)
  • Don’t write broadcast/PMs in logs of unrelated channels
  • Smuxi uses regulary 100% CPU for a short time
  • Persistent chat history needs to remember seen highlights/messages for the message counters
  • Unseen message count includes part/join activity on reconnect
  • Seen message become unseen on reconnect to server
  • Crash when persistency is sqlite and number of messages is large enough
  • On reconnect to running smuxi-server the message counter is misleading
  • exposed IpcChannel is world-writable
  • SQL: ERROR about MessageBuffer/PersistentSqlite/MaxCapacity
  • Show difference between old and new topic
  • Remember marker line even when frontend has been closed
  • Plugin API for Engine Commands / Command Hooks
  • Option to auto-change nick when the frontend client disconnects from the server
  • NICKSERV identification.
  • New message history backend: SQLite
  • Smuxi should only auto resize the nick list on join
  • Expose events for hooks
  • Mark “Persistency Type” “Persistent (Db4o)” to be deprecated
  • Consistent highlight counter (color and text)
  • History of messages should be persisted (and reloaded after restart)
  • Make SQLite as message backend the new default

Installation instructions:

Up to date packages are available via some third party PPA, so installing the software on Ubuntu is easy. Just add the PPA to your system, update the local repository index and install the smuxi package:

$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:meebey/smuxi-stable
$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get install smuxi

Optional, to remove smuxi, do:

$ sudo apt-get remove smuxi

The installation instructions should work on Ubuntu 16.04 Xenial Xerus, Ubuntu 15.10 Wily Werewolf, Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty Tahr, Linux Mint 17.x, Elementary OS 0.3 Freya and other Ubuntu derivative systems.
