Hello Linux Geeksters. Linux Mint 17 RC has been released, in both Cinnamon and Mate flavors, meaning that the final version of Linux Mint 17 Qiana is close to release.
There isn’t much information yet, due to the fact that the release notes of Linux Mint 17 RC have not been made available yet. We know for sure that Linux Mint 17 Qiana is based on Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty Tahr, the Cinnamon flavor will be using Cinnamon 2.2.0, while the Mate version will come with Mate 1.8.
You can download Linux Mint 17 RC, with Cinnamon and Mate, for both 32 bit and 64 bit systems, from here.
While nothing is decided yet, Clem thinks of adopting only the LTS versions of Ubuntu and build the non-LTS versions of Linux Mint on the latest Ubuntu LTS image, in order to focus more on the development of Cinnamon, Mate and Mint specific tools.
Example: Linux Mint 17 LTS to be based on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS and all the future versions until Linux Mint 20 to be based on Ubuntu 14.04, while Linux Mint 21 to use Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (which is the next LTS release after Ubuntu 14.04) as a base.
