Hello Linux Geeksters. As you may know, Ubuntu 14.10 Utopic Unicorn Alpha 2 has been released today, in all the traditional flavors, except Xubuntu and Ubuntu itself (Ubuntu Unity): Ubuntu (using Unity), Ubuntu GNOME, Kubuntu, Lubuntu, UbuntuKylin, Ubuntu Clound. Also Ubuntu 14.10 Mate Remix Alpha 2 has been released today, despite the fact that it is not an official Ubuntu flavor yet.
Ubuntu 14.10 Alpha 2 implements new some under-development applications, so that the users can report bugs for the developers to fix in the daily images. For example, a RC version of Kernel 3.16 now runs on the Alpha 2 images, while Kernel 3.16 stable will be implemented on the final versions of Ubuntu 14.10.
Ubuntu GNOME 14.10 Alpha 2:
As expected, Ubuntu 14.10 Alpha 2 uses GNOME 3.12 (and two new apps: Weather and Maps), which will be kept also for the final release. Unlike Fedora, the Ubuntu systems do not get released with the latest GNOME iterations, for stability reasons.
However, GNOME 3.14 will be available via the GNOME PPAs. To install GNOME 3.14 on Ubuntu 14.10 follow the instructions in THIS ARTICLE. HOWEVER, you should not install an unstable desktop environment on an unstable system and hope things won’t blow up.

Kubuntu 14.10 Alpha 2:
Kubuntu 14.10 Alpha 2 does not ship with KDE Plasma 5, KDE 4.14 Beta 3 being uses as default.
Howeverm if you want to test KDE 5, you can either the KDE Plasma 5 Daily Image, or follow the instructions in THIS article, and install it on Ubuntu 14.10 (or even Ubuntu 14.04).
For the more adventurous, test images using the new Plasma 5 desktop as default are also available to test.
Lubuntu 14.10 Alpha 2:
Lubuntu 14.10 Alpha 2 comes only with a bunch of fixes for already known stability regressions.

UbuntuKylin 14.10 Alpha 2:
For those who don’t know, Ubuntu Kylin is an Ubuntu system specially created for the Chinese, using the Chinese language, Kingsoft Office as the default office suite and having some China-specific optimizations. The alpha 2 comes with Ubuntu Kylin Software Centre 0.3.2 and comes with Wiznote (note taking app) as default.

Ubuntu Cloud 14.10 Alpha 2:
Ubuntu Cloud 14.10 Alpha 2 can be run on Amazon EC2, Openstack, SmartOS and other clouds.
Ubuntu 14.10 Mate Alpha 2:
While Ubuntu 14.10 Mate Remix is not yet an official Ubuntu flavor, the developers have managed to sync the
release of the Alpha 2 with the release of the official flavors.
Ubuntu 14.10 Mate 2 uses Mate 1.8.1, which is a lightweight GNOME 2 looking desktop environment, got EFI support, an Ubuntu-like panel layout has been implemented, Pluma got the Ambiance and Radiance theme added, Totem and Rhythmbox plugins have been made available, Metacity replaces Marco in the LiveCD, the Network Manager applet has received improvements.
Ubuntu Mate is from being a stable release, but it is an alpha 2 release afterall. Also, unfortunately there is no way to upgrade from Alpha 1 to Alpha 2.
Ubuntu 14.10 (Unity):
Ubuntu 14.10 is the first system that will be available in two Unity versions: one using Unity 7 over X.org and Ubuntu Desktop Next, using Unity 8 and Mir. Due to the fact that both this two versions of Ubuntu get updated frequently via the daily images, Canonical did not release an Ubuntu 14.10 Alpha 2 image.
