Hello Linux Geeksters. Not long ago, the developers have scheduled the freeze date of Debian 8.0 Jessie and created a small list of the improvements that will come with the next Debian system.

Now, the developers are thinking of releasing Debian 8.0 Jessie with XFCE as the default desktop environment, as a replacement for GNOME 3, which was the default on Debian Wheezy. The discussions for switching to XFCE will start in August 2014, before the freeze, which is scheduled for November 2014.
Since GNOME 2 is old and outdated, adopting XFCE may be a good decision, since it is lightweight but modern enough get customizations, it uses LightDM as the default display manager so it does not depends on Gnome’s GDM and the installer’s image may fit on a CD.
We’ll see if this really happens or the idea will be dropped for the final version of Debian Jessie.
