As you may know, Edubuntu (previously named Ubuntu Education Edition) is an Ubuntu flavor specially created for schools, students and people with education purposes. It is a regular Ubuntu fork, but has software for teachers and students pre-installed.
Edubuntu uses as code base only the LTS versions of Ubuntu, but the developers have recently announced that they will skip the Ubuntu 16.04 LTS release, supporting Edubuntu 14.04 till April 2019.
Most likely, the OS will not receive new features and updates, unless a third party developer decides to contribute to it. If you want such a distro but don’t like Ubuntu, you could always try an alternative: Debian-Edu, Fedora Education or OpenSUSE-Edu.
