How To Easily Disable The Webcam On Ubuntu 13.10 Saucy Salamander

Hello Linux Geeksters In this article I will show you how to easily disable the webcam on your laptop, running Ubuntu 13.10 Saucy Salamander, by removing the module.

The module that loads your kernel drivers to the kernel is called uvcvideo, so if you don’t ever use the webcam, you can remove the module:

To temporary disable the webcam module, do this:

$ sudo modprobe -r uvcvideo

To disable the webcam module persistently, blacklist the module, like this:

sudo sh -c 'echo "blacklist uvcvideo" >> /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf'

To re-enable the webcam module, use the above oneliner for removing uvcvideo from the blacklist and load the uvcvideo kernel module, with modprobe:

$ sudo $ perl -ni -e 'print unless /uvcvideo/' /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf
$ sudo modprobe uvcvideo
