As you may know, Blender is a powerful suite for animation, modeling, interactive creation, post-production with support for a lot of file formats. The latest version available is Blender 2.68, which has been released recently. It brins more than 280 bug fixes and has some new features. For a full list of improvements, see the changelog.
In this article I will show you how to install Blender 2.68 on the most popular Linux systems, like: Ubuntu 13.10 Saucy Salamander, Ubuntu 13.04 Raring Ringtail, Ubuntu 12.10 Quantal Quetzal, Ubuntu 12.04 Precise Pangolin, Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx, Linux Mint 16 Petra, Linux Mint 15 Olivia, Linux Mint 14 Nadia, Linux Mint 13 Maya, Debian Jessie, Debian Sid, Debian Wheezy, Debian Squeeze, Fedora 19, Fedora 18, Fedora 17, OpenSUSE 13.1, OpenSUSE 12.3, OpenSUSE 12.2, Mageia 4, Mageia 3, CentOS and many others.
There isn’t any repository available yet for Blender 2.68 but it can be easily downloaded and run, because it comes with pre-compiled libraries.
Instructions for running Blender 2.68 on 32 bit Linux systems:
Download and extract Blender:
$ wget -c http://ftp.halifax.rwth-aachen.de/blender/release/Blender2.68/blender-2.68-linux-glibc211-i686.tar.bz2
$ tar -xjvf blender-2.68-linux-glibc211-i686.tar.bz2
Change into the blender directory
$ cd blender-2.68-linux-glibc211-i686
Set execution permissions:
$ sudo chmod +x blender
Run Blender:
$./blender
Instructions for running Blender 2.68 on 64 bit Linux systems:
Download and extract Blender:
$ wget -c http://ftp.halifax.rwth-aachen.de/blender/release/Blender2.68/blender-2.68-linux-glibc211-x86_64.tar.bz2
$ tar -xjvf blender-2.68-linux-glibc211-x86_64.tar.bz2
Change into the blender directory
$ cd blender-2.68-linux-glibc211-x86_64
Set execution permissions:
$ sudo chmod +x blender
Run Blender:
$./blender
