As you may know, the popular open-source, multi-platform audio and video encoding tool FFmpeg has been updated to FFmpeg 2.0. In 10 months of work, many fixes and improvements have been done. To see the full list of changes and new features, read the official changelog.
In this article I will show you how to install FFmpeg 2.0 on Ubuntu 13.04 Raring Ringtail, Ubuntu 12.10 Quantal Quetzal, Ubuntu 12.04 Precise Pangolin, Linux Mint 15 Olivia, Linux Mint 14 Nadia, Linux Mint 13 Maya and Elementary OS 0.2 Luna.
Because it is available via PPA, installing FFmpeg 2.0 on Ubuntu, Linux Mint and Elementary OS is easy. All you have to do is add the ppa, update the local repository index and install the ffpmeg package:
$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:samrog131/ppa
$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get install ffmpeg
FFMpeg is NOT available in the samrog131/precise PPA. So you cannot install ffmpeg on Ubuntu 12.04 (anymore?) with this repository. I don’t know, if it had been available earlier.
dude this is an old post, support for ubuntu 12.04 has been dropped from samrog’s ppa.
