Hello Linux Geeksters. As you may know, Firefox 28 stable has been recently released, being the last version before the new Australis interface will be adopted.
Among others, Firefox 28 comes with media enhancements, a new feature that enables the users to adjust the volume control of the audio and video content in HTML5 and support for decoding of VP9 video compression.
In this article I will show you how to install Firefox 28 on Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Debian, Fedora, CentOS, OpenSUSE, Mageia and OpenMandriva.
Because Firefox 28 is not available via any repository yet, we have to download Firefox 28 from the Mozilla site, extract the archive, move to /opt and symlink the launcher.
Follow the instructions for your system’s architecture exactly, in order to get a successful installation.
How to install Firefox 28 on 32 bit Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Debian, Fedora, CentOS, OpenSUSE, Mageia and OpenMandriva:
$ wget ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/28.0/linux-i686/en-US/firefox-28.0.tar.bz2
$ tar -xjvf firefox-28.0.tar.bz2
$ sudo rm -r /opt/firefox*
$ sudo mv firefox /opt/firefox28
$ sudo ln -s /opt/firefox28/firefox /usr/bin/firefox
How to install Firefox 28 on 64 bit Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Debian, Fedora, CentOS, OpenSUSE, Mageia and OpenMandriva:
$ wget ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/28.0/linux-x86_64/en-US/firefox-28.0.tar.bz2
$ tar -xjvf firefox-28.0.tar.bz2
$ sudo rm -r /opt/firefox*
