The latest installation instructions for KDE Plasma

Hello Linux Geeksters. As you may know, KDE 4.14 stable has been officially released, being the latest iteration of the KDE 4 series, because the developers will switch to KDE Plasma 5 soon.

KDE 4.14 will be supported until November and will have three new point releases: KDE 4.14.1, KDE 4.14.2 and KDE 4.14.3. Among others, KDE 4.14 has received support for SOCKS5 proxy in ICQ protocol, got support for audio calls, the VI mode for Kate has been enhanced, a new Lua backend has been implemented, Dolphin (the KDE file manager) got support for displaying thumbnails of .gpx, .kml and other file formats supported by Marble and a bunch of KML improvements have been added.

In this article I will show you how to install KDE 4.14 on Kubuntu 14.04 Trusty Tahr and Linux Mint 17 KDE Qiana.

Because it is available via the Kubuntu PPA, installing KDE 4.14 on Kubuntu 14.04 and Linux Mint 17 KDE is easy. All you have to do is add the ppa to your system, update the local repository index and perform a full system upgrade:

$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:kubuntu-ppa/ppa
$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

If you don’t have a previous version of KDE installed on your Ubuntu 14.04 system, do:

$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:kubuntu-ppa/ppa
$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get install kde-standard kubuntu-desktop
