How To Install Kernel 3.18 On Ubuntu 14.10, Ubuntu 14.04 And Derivatives

In this article I will show you how to install Kernel 3.18 on Ubuntu 14.10 Utopic Unicorn, Ubuntu 14.04 Trusy Tahr, Linux Mint 17.1 Rebecca, Linux Mint 17 Qiana, Pinguy OS 14.04, LXLE 14.04, Peppermint Five, Deepin 2014, Linux Lite 2.0, Elementary OS 0.3 Freya and other Ubuntu 14.04 derivative systems.

Because it is not available via PPA, the needed deb packages of Kernel 3.18 are available via kernel.ubuntu.com. Follow the instructions for your system’s architecture exactly, in order to get a successful installation.

How to install Kernel 3.18 on 32 bit Ubuntu 14.10, Ubuntu 14.04 and derivative systems:

Download the needed packages:

$ cd /tmp
$ wget \
kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.18-vivid/linux-headers-3.18.0-031800_3.18.0-031800.201412071935_all.deb \
kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.18-vivid/linux-headers-3.18.0-031800-generic_3.18.0-031800.201412071935_i386.deb \
kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.18-vivid/linux-image-3.18.0-031800-generic_3.18.0-031800.201412071935_i386.deb

Install Kernel 3.18:

$ sudo dpkg -i linux-headers-3.18*.deb linux-image-3.18*.deb

After the kernel has been successfully installed, reboot:

$ sudo reboot

Optional, remove the kernel:

$ sudo apt-get remove linux-headers-3.18* linux-image-3.18*

How to install Kernel 3.18 on 64 bit Ubuntu 14.10, Ubuntu 14.04 and derivative systems:

Download the needed packages:

$ cd /tmp
$ wget \

Install Kernel 3.18:

$ sudo dpkg -i linux-headers-3.18*.deb linux-image-3.18*.deb
