How To Install Kernel 3.19 RC5 On Ubuntu 14.10, Ubuntu 14.04 And Derivatives

Hello Linux Geeksters. As you may know, Kernel 3.19 RC5 has been released this weekend, being a few releases only from the final version.

This is what Linus said in the mailing lists:

That said, it’s not like there is anything particularly scary in here. The arm64 vm bug that I mentioned as pending in the rc4 notes got fixed within a day of that previous rc release, and the rest looks pretty standard,”

In this article I will show you how to install Kernel 3.19 RC 5  on Ubuntu 14.10 Utopic Unicorn, Ubuntu 14.04 Trusy Tahr, Linux Mint 17 Qiana, Pinguy OS 14.04, LXLE 14.04, Peppermint Five, Deepin 2014, Linux Lite 2.0, Elementary OS 0.3 Freya and other Ubuntu derivative systems.

Because it is not available via PPA, the needed deb packages of Kernel 3.19 RC5 are available via kernel.ubuntu.com. Follow the instructions for your system’s architecture exactly, in order to get a successful installation.

How to install Kernel 3.19 RC5 on 32 bit Ubuntu 14.10, Ubuntu 14.04 and derivative systems:

Download the needed packages:

$ cd /tmp
$ wget \
kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.19-rc5-vivid/linux-headers-3.19.0-031900rc5_3.19.0-031900rc5.201501180935_all.deb \
kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.19-rc5-vivid/linux-headers-3.19.0-031900rc5-generic_3.19.0-031900rc5.201501180935_i386.deb \
kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.19-rc5-vivid/linux-image-3.19.0-031900rc5-generic_3.19.0-031900rc5.201501180935_i386.deb

Install Kernel 3.19 RC5:

$ sudo dpkg -i linux-headers-3.19*.deb linux-image-3.19*.deb

After the kernel has been successfully installed, reboot:

$ sudo reboot

Optional, remove the kernel:

$ sudo apt-get remove linux-header-3.19* linux-image-3.19*

How to install Kernel 3.19 RC5 on 64 bit Ubuntu 14.10, Ubuntu 14.04 and derivative systems:

Download the needed packages:

$ cd /tmp
$ wget \
kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.19-rc5-vivid/linux-headers-3.19.0-031900rc5_3.19.0-031900rc5.201501180935_all.deb \
kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.19-rc5-vivid/linux-headers-3.19.0-031900rc5-generic_3.19.0-031900rc5.201501180935_amd64.deb \
kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.19-rc5-vivid/linux-image-3.19.0-031900rc5-generic_3.19.0-031900rc5.201501180935_amd64.deb

Install Kernel 3.19 RC5:

$ sudo dpkg -i linux-headers-3.19*.deb linux-image-3.19*.deb

After the kernel has been successfully installed, reboot:

$ sudo reboot

Optional, remove the kernel:

$ sudo apt-get remove linux-header-3.19* linux-image-3.19*
