Hello Linux Geeksters. As you may know, XBMC was a famous open source media hub and home theater PC, being translated in more than 30 languages. Also, its features can be highly extended via third party plugins and extensions and has support for PVR (personal video recorder).
Starting with XBMC 14, the open-source software will be renamed to Kodi Entertainment Center, Kodi 14 being the first release.
Recently, Kodi 14.0 stable has been finally released, bringing the latest video codec support via FFmpeg. Also, layout support for the virtual keyboard has been added, the Kodi Library has received improvements and crashes on Linux and audio-related bug-fixes has been implemented.
In this article I will show you how to install Kodi 14.0 “Helix” on Ubuntu 14.10 Utopic Unicorn, Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty Tahr, Ubuntu 12.04 Precise Pangolin, Linux Mint 17.1 Rebecca, Linux Mint 17 Qiana, Linux Mint 13 Maya, Pinguy OS 14.04, Elementary OS 0.3 Freya, Elementary OS 0.2 Luna, Peppermint Five, Deepin 2014, LXLE 14.04, Linux Lite 2.0 and other Ubuntu 14.04 and Ubuntu 12.04 derivative systems.
Because it is available via PPA, installing Kodi 14.0 “Helix” on Ubuntu 14.10 Utopic Unicorn, Ubuntu 14.04, Ubuntu 12.04 and derivative system is easy. All you have to do is add the ppa to your system, update the local repository index and install the xbmc package. Like this:

Also, to install the encode addon, do:

Optional, to remove kodi, do:

Tried the instructions to install Kodi on Linux 16 but get “Unable to locate package kodi” error message.
that’s because the repository does not contain any kodi packages for linux mint 16.
